Since we have concluded the weekly series on the virtues, I would like to spend time unlocking Education in Virtue® with you. The best place to start is with the words education and virtue.
Education comes from the Latin ‘educare’ which means to draw out and virtue simply means the habit of doing good. Therefore, it is understood that the human person is at the center of virtue education. Although every individual is in a state of brokenness from a fallen human nature, each bears the image of God and is innately good.
By the grace of baptism, the person is immersed in the life of the Most Holy Trinity and infused with the theological virtues, gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the means to grow in goodness through the moral (cardinal) virtues. Hence, an education in virtue is necessary to ‘draw out’, or cultivate what has been given to us by God, and to become like Him. As St. Gregory of Nyssa said, “the goal of the virtuous life is to become like God.”
This education takes place when the language of virtue is intentionally taught and gives shape to how each person thinks, speaks, and acts. It is the very fiber of re-establishing a culture based on truth, beauty, and goodness.
Why? Because the culture changes as people change and strive for these transcendentals which ultimately lead to interior peace and happiness.
