If you have been to Hobby Lobby®, you already know the names of the three theological virtues–Faith, Hope, and Love. At Baptism, we receive sanctifying grace, which elevates us to participate in God’s life. But did you know we also receive the theological virtues which orient us to God and dispose us to live in relationship with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit? God infuses these virtues into our souls at Baptism!

It’s great news that God, in His goodness, created us for a supernatural end–to be happy with Him forever! We know this through Divine Revelation; God’s communication of Himself, His love, and His plan for our salvation. All that He has revealed to us is contained in the Deposit of Faith which includes Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and is safeguarded by the Magisterium of the Church.

Whew! Did you get all that? It’s a lot, I know. However, what is utterly incredible is that God gave us the virtues to know Him, trust in Him, and love Him. By faith, we can believe in Him and all He has revealed, but this does not just magically happen. Although we have virtue, we must also nurture it in the following ways:

  • Prayer–this enables us to guard our hearts by living in communion with God.
  • Reception of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, nourish our soul with His life and grace.
  • Study of the truth contained in the Deposit of Faith.

I encourage you to try to nurture the theological virtue of faith through these suggestions. You may also wish to recite an Act of Faith each day.
