Who Daily Bears Us Up

“Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up: God is our salvation.”
– Psalm 68:19

“Who daily bears us up.” This line struck my heart as it expresses what we wish to utter and truly believe—that God is sustaining us each day and these moments are our means to salvation. The Samaritan woman came to believe in Jesus and announced the good news to everyone in her town. She brought them to Jesus and they “heard for themselves and knew Him to be the Savior of the world” (John 4:42).

This encounter is extraordinary, but what was the pivotal moment that lead to her conversion? To me, it would seem the pivotal moment is when Jesus says to her, “Give me a drink” (John 4:7). In this request, he is initiating a conversation with her and answers her inquiry further by replying. “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink’ you would have asked him and he would give you living water” (John 4:7,10).

Jesus says the same thing to us each day—”Give me a drink.” Indeed, it is a bit startling to hear these words as we wonder how we can quench the thirst of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I believe the answer lies in what we so often try to conceal from others—our tears. Yes, this is the “drink” we can offer to him as they well up from the core of our being. Our tears are the most vulnerable expression of ourselves and in fact, express everything we experience in our humanity. Tears of joy, sorrow, sadness, laughter, compassion, mercy, contrition, pain, rejection, fear, laughter, betrayal, and mourning. These tears cleanse our hearts to receive the drink He offers to us in return (John 4:10) —that is His grace and inner peace which “daily bears us up” as we journey through life.

I encourage you in these challenging days to not be afraid and offer to our Lord and Savior all the tears which well up from within. He is with us always (Matthew 28:20).
