One truth that is evident in the Gospels is that following Jesus leads to happiness and interior freedom. His call is transformative because individuals immediately and radically follow Him. The apostle Matthew was a tax collector, sitting at his customs post. Christ looked upon him with the eyes of mercy and called him saying, “‘Follow Me.’ And he got up and followed Him” (Mark 214).

The brevity of the Gospel account reveals to us Matthew’s readiness. By his response, it would seem that he did not cling to his riches. He was willing to leave all and follow Jesus Christ. The virtue of generosity challenges us to move beyond ourselves and to give without counting the cost. May we strive to emulate St. Matthew and get up from our places of comfort to cheerfully give to others.
