GROW IN VIRTUE

“Man, who is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself, cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself” (Gaudium et Spes, 24). The virtue of generosity lies at the heart of this profound truth as it means the giving of oneself in a willing and cheerful manner for the good of others. A person with a generous heart gives without counting the cost. This way of living requires self-knowledge.

Self-knowledge enables you to be honest and sincere about your actions toward others. It can be so easy to fall into selfishness or manipulation. You can become preoccupied with your own worldview that the needs of the other person get lost. St. John Paul II reminded us that “the worst prison is a closed heart.” This way of life leads to sadness and not truly finding oneself.

Living generously is a day-to-day adventure. Ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten your mind in order to recognize the little ways you can offer a sincere gift of yourself to others.

St. Giuseppe Moscati DATES: 1880–1927 | FEAST: November 16
Giuseppe Moscati was an Italian doctor in the early 1900s. He worked hard to get to know his patients personally and bring them back to the sacraments as well as to physical health. Often he would not accept payment from his poor patients, or he would secretly slip their money back to them with their medicine so as not to embarrass them. Dr. Moscati also trained younger doctors to be generous in caring for both the emotional and spiritual needs of their patients.
