GROW IN VIRTUE
Life is good, but each day also brings challenges, joys, and sorrows. The virtue of fortitude also known as courage, enables us to endure these difficulties and pain for the sake of what is good. It is the virtue of strength. Fortitude enables one to persevere in the pursuit of goodness in the face of difficulties, even to the point of sacrifice.
At your Baptism, your heavenly Father gave you this christianvirtue to strengthen you, particularly in the face of human weakness, fears, and temptations. Fortitude is the cardinal virtue that perfects your emotions, particularly by freeing you from the grip of fear and anger. It makes you strong in the pursuit of goodness, helping you to resist temptations and overcome obstacles. When inspired by charity, it empowers you to hope in Christ’s strength, to make you confident and joyful in the face of trials, persecution, and even death. Christian martyrdom is a shining example of fortitude.
|“What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we are being slain all the day; we are looked upon as sheep to be slaughtered.’”|
By God’s grace, prudence gives light to our minds, restoring right reason in action. Fortitude and temperance calm the chaos and frustration of our emotions and desires. Justice restores the order of our relationships, rooted in the knowledge that each one of us is known and loved by God.
Sometimes it is much harder to look every day at disappointment, dashed hopes, betrayal, failures, and hopelessness than it is to look down the barrel of a gun. Sometimes the greatest test of courage is in the face of terminal illness. If we ask for the gift of courage, we will receive it.—Fr. Benedict Groeschel, The Virtue Driven Life
